Auto Trader announces winners for new car awards

Volvo, Volkswagen and Tesla clean up in UK car buyers’ poll

Digital automotive marketplace giant Auto Trader has revealed the best cars of 2020 – as voted for by more than 180,000 buyers.

The 2020 awards, which took place on Thursday 2nd July, featured 19 categories. Old favourites including Most Loved Brand and Best Value New Car returned, while we also saw a new entry – the “Rory Reid Award”.

Reid, a former Top Gear presenter, joined the Auto Trader team as a reviewer in 2019. He said: “The boss told me to make [a category] up, so I did! It’s basically the car I would want to live with every day, the one with the fewest compromises, the greatest number of thrills and the one that ultimately covers all of the bases.”

So, which make and model earned the coveted, inaugural prize? Find out in Car Lease Agent’s top picks below.

Tesla Model 3 drives innovation

As predicted, the Tesla Model 3 took home the Best Electric Car award, suggesting an upward trend in early adopters, and Tesla’s foray into the mainstream. Buyers favoured the Tesla’s “fresh approach”, noting innovative features like steering acceleration and one-pedal braking.

Thanks to updates on the September 2019 model, the 3 also drove away with New Car of the Year. Voters said that /car-leasing/tesla/model-3 had shown “huge ambition” and said it was like “driving into the future”.

It’s official – families love the Volvo

The new Volvo XC60 bagged the Best Car for Families accolade, beating 22 other contenders. Drivers noted its ease of parking, roominess, and comfort while driving. It beat stiff competition from Mercedes, winning 11 out of 16 judging categories.

Volvo also took home the Best 7-Seater award with its larger XC90. Beating Peugeot and Sorento, the XC90 achieved a top score in all 16 judging categories. Buyers cited long-distance comfort and parking cameras as big plus points.

Going the extra mile with Volkswagen

Volvo may have won the 7-Seater for its comfort, but the Volkswagen Golf took the top spot with Best Car for Long Distances. Taking the crown from four other contenders, including the Skoda Octavia and the BMW 5 Series, the Golf was noted for its features and accessories.

For something larger, the Volkswagen Amarok captured those American road trip vibes, winning the Best Utility Vehicle. The Mercedes-Bez X-Class and Isuzu D-Max couldn’t beat VW’s adaptable luggage space and smooth gearbox.

Stay tuned for more 2020 winners

It was the Audi S8 that was crowned Rory Reid’s favourite, thanks to its all-round luxury and Lamborghini engine. What’s not to love?
